Improving aWeak Prompt.

When AI gives you a weak result, you usually do not need to rewrite everything from scratch. Diagnose what is missing, improve the instruction that matters, and test again.

01 / THE CORE IDEA

A weak result does not always mean AI cannot do the task.

Sometimes the model simply did not receive enough direction. If the task, context or expected output is unclear, AI has to fill the gaps itself.

Before abandoning the task, inspect the prompt. Identify the specific information or instruction that would make the expected result clearer.

DON'T JUST SAY

“Make it better.” Tell AI what is wrong with the current result or what specifically needs to change.

02 / DIAGNOSE THE PROMPT

Six common signs that your prompt needs improvement.

01

The task is vague

AI knows the general topic but not exactly what action you want it to perform.

EXAMPLE

Help me with inventory.

02

Important context is missing

The instruction makes sense to you because you know the situation, but AI does not have that background.

EXAMPLE

Write a reply about the delay.

03

The output is undefined

AI has to decide whether you want an email, summary, table, checklist, explanation or something else.

EXAMPLE

Explain our stock problem.

04

The audience is unclear

The same information may need very different wording for a customer, manager or frontline employee.

EXAMPLE

Prepare an explanation of the issue.

05

There are no useful boundaries

AI may add assumptions, unnecessary detail or recommendations outside the intended scope.

EXAMPLE

Tell me what caused this shortage.

06

Too many instructions compete

A prompt can also become weak when it contains unnecessary or conflicting requirements.

EXAMPLE

Be extremely detailed, but answer in two sentences.

03 / IMPROVEMENT METHOD

Fix the prompt one useful layer at a time.

Instead of making the prompt longer at random, work through the areas that most often affect output quality.

01
TASKWhat exactly should AI do?

Change a broad request into one clear action.

02
CONTEXTWhat does AI need to know?

Add only the facts that materially affect the answer.

03
AUDIENCEWho will use the result?

Identify the reader when it affects tone, terminology or detail.

04
OUTPUTWhat should the result look like?

Specify the useful structure, length or format.

05
BOUNDARIESWhat should AI avoid?

Add constraints where assumptions or unwanted actions could create problems.

06
REVIEWWhat still needs human checking?

Verify facts, decisions and important conclusions before using the output.

IMPORTANT

You do not have to add all six layers. Fix the parts that are actually causing ambiguity.

04 / WEAK → STRONGER

Watch how a vague workplace prompt becomes more useful.

VERSION 01Too vague

Write a report about the stock difference.

PROBLEM

AI does not know the quantities, investigation status, audience, required format or whether the cause is confirmed.

↓
VERSION 02Add context

Write a report about an inventory discrepancy. System stock is 620 units and verified physical stock is 597 units.

BETTER, BUT...

The task now has facts, but AI still does not know the investigation status or how the report should be structured.

↓
VERSION 03Clear and controlled

Act as an inventory control supervisor. Prepare a concise inventory discrepancy report for the inventory manager. System stock is 620 units and two verified physical counts show 597 units, creating a shortage of 23 units. Receiving, outbound and adjustment transactions have been reviewed, but the root cause has not been confirmed. Use the headings Variance, Checks Completed, Findings and Recommended Next Action. Do not invent a cause for the discrepancy.

WHY IT IS STRONGER

✓ Clear task

✓ Relevant context

✓ Defined audience

✓ Required structure

✓ Important constraint

✓ No unsupported conclusion

05 / ITERATE

You can improve the result without rebuilding the whole prompt.

If the first response is close but not quite right, give targeted follow-up instructions.

TOO LONG?

“Keep the same information but reduce the summary to 150 words.”

TOO TECHNICAL?

“Rewrite this in simple English for a non-technical manager.”

WRONG FORMAT?

“Keep the content but convert the recommendations into a five-step checklist.”

TOO GENERIC?

“Make the recommendations specific to the warehouse facts I provided.”

01Generate

Get the first useful draft.

→
02Inspect

Identify what is weak.

→
03Adjust

Give a specific correction.

→
04Review

Check the revised result.

06 / QUICK CHECK

Use this checklist when a prompt is not giving you what you need.

01

Can I identify one clear task?

✓
02

Does AI have the facts needed to understand the situation?

✓
03

Is the intended audience clear when it matters?

✓
04

Have I defined a useful output format?

✓
05

Have I removed unnecessary or conflicting instructions?

✓
06

Have I prevented important unsupported assumptions?

✓
DON'T CONFUSE PROMPT QUALITY WITH FACTUAL ACCURACY

A well-written prompt can improve relevance and consistency, but it cannot guarantee that every AI-generated statement is correct. Important facts and decisions still require review.

07 / PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

Improve prompts by diagnosing the problem, not by adding random detail.

When a result is weak, identify what AI misunderstood or lacked. Then make the smallest useful improvement and generate again.

01Diagnose

What went wrong?

→
02Improve

Fix the missing instruction.

→
03Test

Generate another result.

→
04Review

Keep improving if needed.
